Sophie Ellis-Bextor transitioned from a singer in an indie band to to mainstream fame through Spiller’s huge number one single “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)” in 2000 (a song topped by an even bigger worldwide smash in “Murder on the Dancefloor” the next year), then followed up by many other great songs, such as “Not Giving Up on Love”, her 2010 Armin van Buuren collaboration, or the gentle piano ballad, “Young Blood” in 2014. In recent years she released a trilogy of records she’d made with multi-instrumentalist Ed Harcourt, beginning in 2014 with the critically and commercially successful “Wanderlust” (inspired by Eastern Europe), and continuing with 2016’s “Familia” (inspired by Latin America), then finishing up in 2023’s “HANA” (inspired by East Asia). Her much-loved Kitchen Disco parties shared on Instagram over lockdown became a completely different phenomenon, followed by a sold out Kitchen Disco live tour, a greatest hits compilation, a live album, and recently a performance at Glastonbury’s famous Pyramid Stage.
