J.I.D for the first time in Poland! After his North American tour with Logic, the young rapper from the Spillage Village collective will visit Proxima in Warsaw on December 19th.
J.I.D grew up in Atlanta and studied at the Hampton University. His roommates at college were two members of Earthgang – Doctur Dot and Johnny Venus. Together with Earthgang, Hollywood JB and JordxnBryant, J.I.D formed the collective Spillage Village in 2010. Currently, Spillage Village also includes Mereba, 6LACK and Lute. In the following years J.I.D released a series of mixtapes (Cakewalk, Cakewalk 2, Route of All Evil, Para Tu), while working in a call center and delivering pizza. He also participated in collaboration projects of Spillage Village (Bears Like This, Bears Like This Too), which were produced by Mac Miller and J. Cole, among others. His first EP, DiCaprio, saw the light of day in 2015.
J.I.D must have caught J. Cole’s eye, because in 2017 he got signed to the rapper’s label – Dreamville Records. He released his debut studio album – The Never Story, by Dreamville in March 2017, which was supported by the single Never. The album was produced by J. Cole and included guest appearances by EarthGang, 6LACK and Mereba among others. J.I.D and rapper Saba also collaborated with the indie pop band Foster The People, remixing their song Pay The Man.
After a series of concerts around the world J.I.D made a comeback in November 2018 with his second LP – DiCaprio 2. The album was supported by singles 151 Rum and Off Deez with J. Cole. A number of artists were featured on the album, such as 6LACK, ASAP Ferg, BJ the Chicago Kid, Ella Mai, J. Cole, Joey Badass and Method Man. Mac Miller participated in the production. The album gained critical acclaim, scoring an average of 80 on Metascore. In Pitchfork’s review J.I.D is compared to Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller and Anderson. Paak, and DiCaprio 2 landed on the best hip-hop albums of 2018 lists according to Rolling Stone and Billboard. Currently J.I.D is on the “Catch me if you can” tour promoting DiCaprio 2, which also includes a date in Poland.
Among his inspirations, J.I.D A mentions artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Gucci Mane, Jay-Z and the Arctic Monkeys. Although he doesn’t forget about his roots, J.I.D disassociates himself from the generic trap sound of the Atlanta scene. The rapper puts great emphasis on the lyrics – in his music he touches on topics such as mental health, women’s empowerment, drug addiction, African-American culture and politics.
Forbes described the rapper as “one of hip-hop’s most exciting live acts,” and newonce.net speculates that he may become Kendrick Lamar’s successor. Tickets at the price of 79 PLN are available now via fource.pl, GoOut.pl, Eventim.pl, Ticketmaster.pl, Biletomat.pl, Going.pl and all Empik stores.
